The annual Norfolk County Agriculture Tour was held recently, stopping at ten farms and businesses across the municipality that are focused on agriculture and food.
Stops included Local Vegetable Company (greens), DeHooghe Farms (beef), Ryder Farms (modern bunkhouse), Charlotteville Brewing Co. (nanobrewery in development), Golden Leaf Estate Winery, EZ Grow Farms (blueberries and strawberry plant nursery), MariCann (medical marijuana), ICON Goats (dairy), Ontario Popping Corn, and Scotlynn Group (grower and logistics).
A common element across the day was the demonstration of expertise and innovation by all owners of these businesses, as well as the progress the successes they have achieved.
About 40 people toured the stops, including staff and elected representatives of Norfolk County, but also chefs, related businesses, other farmers, and agency staff serving the ag sector.
The importance of Foreign Agricultural Resource Management Services (F.A.R.M.S.) program, which supplies offshore labour to the agriculture sector, was mentioned several times as key to survival for farmers in Ontario.
